1. Patrick Shanahan, b. ca. 1820 at Ballylongford, County Kerry, Ireland

Patrick Shanahan immigrated to America aboard the ship, Garland, from Limerick, arriving at New York on 27 May 1851. He was 30 years old and went to Cambria County, Pennsylvania where he worked as a miner.

Per Dennis Shanahan in November 1998 "There was a letter from the farm in Salina, since lost, that said Patrick came from Ballylongford, County Kerry, and his wife came from County Clare-hence my daughters Kerry and Meghan Clare. It turns out that the Shanahan's also have origins in County Clare but were routed by the McNamaras about 400 years ago and fled south, across the Shannon, to County Kerry, where they still are today. We visited one of the McNamara's castles(or tower houses)in County Clare. There were about 80 such houses in County Clare of which the McNamara's controlled about half. The other half were controlled by the O'Brians, the truly dominant clan in Southwest Ireland at that time. What is fascinating is that these clans(or tribes)ruled for hundreds of years, eventually becoming highwaymen and robbers before being executed by the British in the 18th century.

Joseph Michael Shanahan graduated from Kansas State University and served as an officer in the Navy in WW I. He married Gertrude Ellen McMahon and they had one son, Joseph Brian. Gertrude died when Joseph Brian was still a very small child. Joseph Michael sold insurance and eventually opened his own agency for Franklin Insurance Company in Wichita, Kansas.
